Stop the Bleed Training
Stop the Bleed trains individuals to step in before first responders arrive to prevent victims from excessive bleeding that can cause death. Through Stop the Bleed training, individuals can learn to control bleeding by packing wounds in the neck, armpits, and groin, applying pressure to wounds in the abdomen and chest, and using a tourniquet above the wounds on the arms or legs. A June 2019 Texas law states that all public school staff and students in seventh grade and above must be trained in stop the bleed in case of an emergency, so this certification helps HOSA members to be ahead of the curve in learning how to step in in case of an emergency!

My stop the bleed experience was super fun and enlightening! Going into the class I did not know what to expect and I was actually very anxious about the course material and how difficult it would be to learn. This anxiety was quickly relinquished however due to the great instructors and their simple yet effective teaching method of hands on learning and videos!
My favorite part of the experience was when we got to “stop the bleed” in a pool noodle by using gauze. This hands on learning allowed me to learn how much pressure I needed to use when trying to stop a bleed. Overall this experience was super impactful as I felt I walked out of it equipped to help anyone in the case that an emergency arised. It was a simple experience that taught me a valuable lesson on how to stop bleeds, be alert, and help others given that a situation required it.

Our HOSA Chapter hosted a program called Stop the Bleed with JPS health professionals where we were taught bleeding control basics. In the program, we used items such as tourniquets and gauzes in order to save lives. With the training, we can save lives in any emergency before any professionals arrive at the scene. While doing this program, I felt lucky and honored to learn that I can save lives with this information. I enjoyed the hands-on experience and I believe that if I was in an emergency situation, I can aid in saving lives.
