My trip to UT Southwestern for the STARS Women in Health & Science Symposium was incredibly enlightening as well as inspiring. The day started with a panel of highly-educated women that are incredibly experienced in their fields, along with a Q&A session that followed. Being able to hear about the struggles that they faced as they garnered experience within their careers successfully shed a light on how education is not possible without stumbling upon some difficulties, especially as a woman. Following the panel session, I was able to rotate into three areas of interactive learning based on UT Southwestern’s programs: Graduate School, Medical School, and School of Health Sciences. My favorite had to be the Graduate School station, as the microbiologists working in the laboratory were able to show us their efforts in trying to find the cause of pre-term labor, an issue mostly affecting women in developing countries. Watching the microbiologists’ speak and seeing the determination in their eyes was inspiring, as it allowed me to understand how science is truly connected to the well-being of all human beings, regardless of their status.

Muzna Shiekh - HOSA Member & Chapter Secretary
Our HOSA Chapter had the opportunity to attend the Women in Sciences and Medicine event at UT Southwestern Medical College. This event’s main purpose was to introduce careers to future health professionals. At this event, I learned about careers such as Orthotics/Prosthetics, Dietitians and Nutritionists. I learned from a second year medical student how to use basic tools and equipment, such as a stethoscope and an ophthalmoscope. Also, I got to meet with researchers and learned about their research. Their current research project was about the Placenta and how to reduce the number of pre-term deliveries. Overall, the experience this event gave me and the new things I learned about the health field was something I wouldn't have been able to obtain myself. I look forward to attending this event next year to learn more exciting things about healthcare.
